Steel pipe is used for a variety of home and industrial applications, such as plumbing and heating. Like most pipes, steel pipe comes in varying thicknesses that allow it to be used in different kinds of applications and under different amounts of stress. Calculating the thickness of a steel pipe's wall is a fairly simple task, requiring little more than a tape measure or ruler and a basic knowledge of mathematics.
Measure the entire pipe's exterior diameter, from the top of the outside wall to the bottom. Jot down this measurement on a notepad so you don't forget it.
Measure the diameter of the pipe's interior, starting at the top of the inner wall to the bottom. Jot down this figure on the notepad.
Subtract the diameter of the pipe's interior from the diameter of the pipe's exterior. Then divide the resulting number by two. The final number is the wall thickness of the steel pipe.
