The American National Standards Institute, or ANSI, creates standards for materials, tools and manufacturing processes. ANSI standards for describing material grades are based on the type of material and are in imperial units.

Grinding Wheels

  • ANSI standard B74.13 defines how grinding wheels are marked to describe their type and grade of abrasive material. Grinding wheel grades range from soft to hard, with soft grade grinding wheels losing their grit sooner than harder, letter grade grinding wheels.

Ceramic Tile

  • ANSI receives its material grade standards from the Tile Council of America, or TCA. According to "Corrosion and Chemical Resistant Masonry Materials Handbook" by Walter Lee Sheppard, the only material grades recognized by ANSI are standard grade and seconds grade. Standard grade tile is of uniform color and has no visible defects if viewed from arm's length. All other tile is considered seconds grade. ANSI standard 137.1 is used for testing ceramic tile.

Photographic Materials

  • According to the book "Basic Photographic Materials and Processes," ANSI standard PH2.30 gives the acceptable illuminance levels for photographic prints. Each grade of material from reflection prints to viewing transparencies have their own acceptable level of illuminiance measured in lux.
