When glass is heated in a furnace at high temperatures, it softens into a molten state. In this state it is able to be formed to the blower's desire. Shaping glass takes much skill, but with practice it can become an art form. Blowing a glass pipe takes some background in glass art and can be very challenging for beginners. It is important to understand the basics for safe and successful pipe blowing.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1.    Clear a work station. The location must be protected so that others who do not know glass blowing safety cannot intrude. Keep your station away from pets and children. Set up all materials so they are easily reachable and ready to use.

2.   Put on protective clothing. At a minimum, put on protective eyewear and gloves. You may also to choose to wear an apron.

  • Run the furnaces. Preheat the glass furnace and the "glory hole" heater. Preheat the cooling oven.

Forming.

3. Pick up the cold pipe. Place your right hand in the middle of the cold pipe. Place your left hand next to your right hand for reinforcement. Lift the cold pipe. Carry cold pipe to glass furnace. Direct the far end of the cold pipe onto the sill of the furnace. Have someone else open the door to the furnace. Place the cold pipe inside the furnace into the molten glass.

  • 4.  Slowly rotate the pipe three times clockwise. After the third rotation, place the cold pipe back on the sill of the furnace. Place your left hand towards the back of the cold pipe and then pull it out with your hands. Have someone else close the furnace door.

  •  5 .Carry the cold pipe horizontal over to the glass blowing work station. Roll the end of the cold pipe on a steel table known as a "marker," forming the molten glass into a sphere shape. Strike the end of the pipe in the "glory hole" heater. As you strike, roll the pipe so that the molten glass is pulled into a pipe-like shape.

  • 6. Sit down in between the two metal rails. Rotate the cold pipe parallel to the floor against the rails as you blow into the open end.

  • 7.Use jacks tweezers around the edge of the molten glass closest to the pipe to squeeze an indentation. Continue to blow into the end while pulling the molten glass outward into a pipe-like shape. Rotate the cold pipe at a slow constant rate. Take "tweezers" tweezer and drip two drops of water onto the indentations.

Cooling

  • 8.Carry piece to the cooling oven.

  • 9.Hold the glass rod attached to the cold pipe over the cooling oven.

  • 10.Separate the glass rod from the cold pipe by gently tapping the ends over the cooling oven.

  • 11Allow the glass rod to cool overnight.
