How to Abort a Thread

A threading die is used to create pipe thread. The die must be lubricated with cutting oil as well as placed squarely onto the end of the pipe to thread it properly. If one or both of these things is not done, it can result in a bad thread. In this case, the threading die has to be removed from the end of the pipe, and the partial thread aborted and cut off the pipe so that a new thread can be installed immediately, or at a later date.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the threading die slowly counter-clockwise, until it is removed completely from the end of the pipe.

    • 2

Mark the pipe 1 inch from the end of the thread--use a felt tip pen. Place the pipe cutter around the pipe and tighten the knurled pipe cutter handle so that the blade rests on the mark.

  • 3.

  • Apply cutting oil onto the blade as well as around the pipe where it will be cut. Turn the pipe cutter 360 degrees twice. Tighten the blade again by turning the knurled handle, and add some more cutting oil to the blade and pipe. Make two more turns, and add more oil. Continue until the pipe is cut through.

  • 4.

  • Place a reamer into the end of the pipe and twist by hand to remove any metal burrs. Clean the end of the pipe with a rag. The pipe end is ready for future threading.
