Black pipe is a mild steel that is used in a variety of functions including ornamental fixtures and various automotive applications. Due to the high carbon content of mild steel it does have the tendency to rust after extended exposure to the elements. You may experience weld seams coming apart or holes appearing due to corrosion. Black pipe can be repaired by welding using an ARC welder. ARC welders are portable and relatively inexpensive to purchase or rent.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the area to be welded with a wire brush to loosen rust and to remove paint. Use a shop towel to remove oil or other lubricants that may be present. A clean welding surface will ensure that the weld will hold firm.

    • 2

Use clamps to hold the pieces of black pipe together. Be certain the pipes are firmly in place and pressed tightly together.

  • 3

  • Attach the alligator clip of the ground cable to the black pipe. Put on the welding mask and insulated gloves.

  • 4.

  • Start the weld with the electrode by creating a weld pool at the beginning of your new weld seam. A weld pool is a puddle of melted metal that will form from the heat of the electrode. The electrode should be held at a 15 degree angle perpendicular to the new weld seam.

  • 5.

  • Drag the weld pool along the length of the area being welded. Continue to weld until your new weld seam is completed.

  • 6.

  • Allow the pipe to cool. Use a wire brush to remove any rough edges and weld splatter. The pipe can then be painted if needed.
