A stove can bring warmth and classic ambiance to your home in the winter, but it requires a chimney for safe and clean functioning. Although it is relatively easy to install the stove itself, the chimney can sometimes pose installation difficulties, particularly with a metal roof. The problem with metal roofs is that it is difficult to seal the roof with flashing once you have cut a hole for the chimney. The best way to confront this type of installation is to use a flexible roof-flashing product that can conform to roof's texture and angle.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the stove in a desired location. Make sure you are adhering to clearance requirements and that the stove is in easy reach of where the chimney will be installed.

    • 2

Cut a hole in the metal roof with a jigsaw, based on the dimensions of your chimney flue and the clearance requirements of the local building code. You may need to establish 2 inches around the pipe and combustible surfaces.

    • 3.

      • Direct chimney pipe sections through the hole in the roof and position so it extends at least 3 feet above the nearby roofline.

      • 4

Install flexible pipe flashing around the top of the chimney to insulate and waterproof the hole you made in the metal roof. Flexible flashings are ideal for metal roofing because of their ability to conform to any pitch and texture of roofline. Cut the cone section of the flashing according to the size of your flue. Slide it down over the flue and make it flush with the roof.

      • 5

Seal the flashing with silicone sealant on the underside of the flashing. Press the flashing to conform with the contours of your metal roof.

      • 6

Install self-tapping screws to secure the flashing in place.

      • 7

Install a storm collar around the top section of chimney and secure with bolts.

      • 8

Install a ceiling support box and attic insulation shields as needed. The ceiling support box should be installed wherever the chimney passes through a floor. An attic insulation shield is necessary if you are passing through an attic. Enclose the chimney in a chase if you are passing through living spaces.

      • 9

Extend the chimney pipe sections down through the support box, if it is present, until it hangs about 4 inches down.

      • 10

Mount the stove pipe adapter onto the bottom of the chimney length. Connect to stove pipe sections on back of your stove.
